EU's Ban on Palm Oil

Palm oil producers in Asia, who have long been arguing with the European Union over the imports of the oil, have decided to work with the European Commission to plan some standards for EU’s new policy - “Farm to Fork” - on food supply. Farm to Fork is a collective movement to enhance food served in restaurants and cafeterias, through a direct access to both farm and non-farm producers. Removing palm fuels from its renewable energy sector, the EU is planning to limit 3-MCPD esters in food products, which are found in refined oils. The Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries has released a new statement supporting the Farm to Fork strategy by the European Commission. The major members of CPOPC, including Malaysia and Indonesia, account for 85% of the palm oil production in the world. The EU is resolved to go with its food program on palm oil to ensure a healthful food system and adopt environmental sustainability considerations. CPOPC, falling out with the EU over cutting out palm oil and thereby affecting the industry, filed a lawsuit at WTO last December. Samira H.
