Digital Shopping Trend Grows in U.S. As Holiday Arrives

The holiday shopping season in 2020 saw a 49% rise in the U.S. online retail sales. This year, digital sales accounted for 19.7% of overall retail sales. The retailers’ gain goes back to “buy online and pick-up-in-store” trend. Due to the pandemic, some retail stores in Walmart Inc and Target Corp had to go through quantity restrictions. Amazon website, too, extended its summer sales event to the month of October to allow retailers, who lost sale opportunity for weeks in the lockdown period, restore their business. Stephen Sadove, the American businessman, said this year we had a safe holiday season, beyond the expectations. He also said that customers will keep to e-commerce in 2021. Furniture sales saw a growth of 16.2% as lockdowns caused people to focus on home improvement. Also, electronic appliances jumped 6% in the lockdown. There was an overall fall in clothing and jewelry sales; however, their digital sales increased 15.7% and 44.6% respectively. Samira H.
