Namibia Holds Off Poultry Import from Europe

Namibia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry has halted imports of live poultry and birds from 10 countries in Europe after the outbreak of HPAI (avian influenza). The banned countries include Germany, Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ukraine, Denmark, France and Sweden. Albertina Shilongo, Chief veterinary officer at the ministry, said as the illness incubates over 21 days, the suspension will come into effect 21 days in advance. Arranged imports and en route authentications have already been called off; However, cooked poultry staples are allowed to come in, certainly following a veterinarian license, she said. The importers of the mentioned countries will be notified of the emergent situation and raw poultry products will be suspended, she added. Samira H.
