While the Brazilian government lessens its efforts to protect environment and deforestation gains speed in Amazon rainforest, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) devotes few fines.
Analysis by Fakebook.eco, revealed that the federal agency’s imposed d fines have lowered from 11,914 in 2019 to 9,516 fines in 2020.
The new government’s trend to battle unlawful deforestation is less strict. President Jair Bolsonaro’s government believes that to fight the region’s poverty, more mining and farming activities need to be done in Amazon. It also believes that Ibama’s fines are not necessary.
As maintained by the government’s space research institute, deforestation in Amazon hit a record in 2020 after 12 years; with clearing up a region seven times larger than London.
