Rise in Chinese Construction Stocks

Following Beijing’s vow to increase investment in its infrastructure, Chinese stocks for construction companies, concrete makers and machinery supplies jumped on Monday. The CSI Construction & Engineering Index soared by 6.2% and CSI Construction Material Index saw a rise of 4.8% right on the first business day in the Chinese New Year.

The benchmark CSI 300 Index drew near 1.5% on the same day. China will react quickly in this quarter by increasing expenditure on infrastructure in order to strengthen economy against challenges, said an official in the National Development and Reform Commission -NDRC.  

The NDRC introduced actions for a relative increase in infrastructure investment along with steady progress within the first quarter.

Chris Leung, DBS Bank's Executive Director and Chief China Economist, said China’s wildcard is to support economic growth in the new year while domestic consumption is slumping and export expansion is draggy. China’s investment in fixed assets is anticipated to increase by 6.5% in 2022, compared to 4.9% in 2021, he said. He also said retail sales are estimated to fall 6% in 2022, compared to 12.5% last year while exports will drop to 7%, from 29.7%  in 2021.
